Spotify Coming to Windows Phone 8

Source: Daily Mobile - December 23rd, 2012

In what perhaps looks like a Christmas gift to Windows Phone users it seems Spotify will be making a Windows Phone 8 app. According to Anna Stromberg product market manager for Windows Phone in Sweden the Spotify app is "currently under development."
Ok while I can't read the above tweets I trust the source plus it says "Spotify" in the question a few times and there is a smiley face next to the word Spotify in the answer. So that has to be good right? Seriously Windows Phone is making a push to close that app gap as quickly as possible and this is another big piece of that puzzle. Now if I could only get Jet Pack Joyride for my Nokia Lumia 920.

Unleash the Beast! First Photos of the 6.1 Inch Huawei Ascend Mate

Source: Daily Mobile - December 24th, 2012

It's not secret that Huawei was going to introduce a monster device the 6.1 inch Huawei Ascend Mate at CES later next month however no one had seen pictures of it before. Now it seems that Huawei's Chairman of Devices Richard Hu was showing off his Ascend Mate at a Huawei store in Guangzhou and there were a quite a few good pictures taken.

The rumored specs on this device are as follows:
  • 1.8GHz HiSilicon K3V3 quad-core chip
  •  4,000mAh battery
  •  9.9mm thickness
  •  361ppi display
  • price 480USD

Some people may write off a device of that size as unnecessary and ridiculous however... At that price tag I may just have to try to find one and test it out for myself.

Which map is best… ?

Source: Daily Mobile - December 13th, 2012

Today's world is integrated and a good mapping software enhances this integration. Any new buyer going to buy a phone lists Maps as an important aspect while buying a new smart phone.
On the scale of 10, maps rate about 4 to 5 for being a pre-requisite add on. But recent stories about Apples IOS sending users to forest, it is important to compare the maps available on various smart phones.
Android: Google Maps (Developed by Google themselves)
Blackberry: 3rd Party Software
iOS: Proprietary Maps developed by Apple
Windows Phone 7 & 8: Nokia Drive
Nokia Symbian Phones: Nokia Maps
Bada: Samsung LBS (Route 66)
WebOS: Carrier Software developed by HP
Out of this I have used Google Maps, Nokia Maps and Nokia Drive and in my opinion Nokia Drive is the best Map available. Google is good but at times it is scratchy and hard on old phones. Nokia is a clear winner in mapping software.
I have not used iOS maps but have heard they are worst. Give your comments on the best maps you have used. At Least we will know where on earth we are on this front.

Hands On Demo of the Nokia Play 360 and Wireless Charging Plate

Source: Daily Mobile - December 14th, 2012

I got a couple new accessories in for my Nokia Lumia 920 in the past few weeks a Nokia Play 360 speaker and wireless charging plate. Both of them work well and I wanted to show you exactly what they are about and how they work.
First the charging plate... It's a simple little device that seems like it wouldn't make that big of difference but it works like it should and my life is much easier because of it.

Second is the Nokia Play 360 speaker which really impressed me. Not only by the sound this speaker makes but also by how quickly it pairs my device and how easily it can be moved from place to place. I like it so much in fact I will probably buy a second speaker. If you have two 360's both of them will connect to your device and each other making one a right speaker and one a left speaker giving you true stereo music anywhere.

Facebook Native app for Android, update for iOS

Source: Daily Mobile - December 14th, 2012

Facebook has launched a update for Android. This is actually not an update but a app built from scratch using SDK.
Facebook has given native codes instead of HTML5 webview codes for faster user interface.
As per Facebooks SDK Engineer Phillip Fung:
"It's twice as fast when looking at photos and opening up your Timeline, and noticeably quicker to launch."

The changes which users will notice are:
  • Your timeline will load faster
  • Your newsfeed will roll out faster
  • Photo's will open on a tap so you can post your likes and comments
  • The Stories bar refreshes itself
Get new Facebook from the Google Play store now
iOS users fret not for Facebook has released an update for them also. The iOS Facebook update has much awaited 'Share' buttons that allows users to share their posts.
iOS users download the app from the App Store
This new strategy is the part of Facebooks 'Mobile First' policy, given the low cash flows it has from mobile telephone market. Therein a bid to fast peddle its approach it is releasing good updates, which will ultimately help us, users.

Kernel Tuner for HTC Phones (Android)

Source: Daily Mobile - December 11th, 2012
This is a utility for HTC Phones with Android. This utility runs especially well with multi-core processor phones.

The Phone has to be rooted in order to run this utility. This utility allows you to underclock/overclock and undervolt/overvolt your CPU and GPU. Almost all Android phones are set to run at fixed kernel speeds. This is done to avoid instability and overheating. But in reality, in multi core phones, the  default kernels use only one CPU and other CPUs are used only when needed. This creates a situation where you have multiple cores but the phone by default uses only one core. In order to maximize the use of all cores this utility is especially used. It can also individually increase CPU speed and voltage.

User can create individual profiles and make the processors operate with schedules. Other features included in the app are:

  1. Changing Capacitive button's backlights
  2. Fastcharge
  3. Vsync for display panel.
  4. Color dept
  5. I/O scheduler
  6. Notification LED timeout.
  7. Sweep2 Wake and enable swap.

You can also tweak the cache size for the SD card.
A widget within the app with give you real-time present state of the processor, battery and other information.

There is reset menu in options windows in case you make some error in speeds or voltages. The widget also allows you to save battery power by giving interval option according to your preference. There is separate options to show the processor speeds in the notification bar but it is not recommended as it drains the battery very fast. The temp can be set in Celsius or Fahrenheit with regards to whether you follow Queens English or American one.

This utility runs on Android phones made by HTC so don't try to cook you phone which is otherwise. The Google Play lists HTC EVO 3D GSM/CDMA as a compatible phone for this app.  Please note that your phones have to be rooted and only multi-core processors like Qualcomm Snapdragon S3 and S4 are suitable for this utility. If you phone behaves erratically after installing it, kindly uninstall the app and restart the phone.

A complete back up of the phone is COMPULSORY before your install this app. Before trying out kindly refer to Developers Website properly.

You should not do this if you are not comfortable with rooting your phone. Any damage to your phone will be your sole responlibility.  This review is for educational purpose.
If you are really serious get the app here.  After installing it if you have any issues kindly inform here

iPhone 6 will feature NFC, 4.8-inch screen...?

Source: Daily Mobile - December 11th, 2012
According to Peter Misek, a Jefferies analyst, Apple should be launching iPhone 6 with 4.8-inch screen, Retina+ IGZO display, new A7 quad-core processor, and no home button which is the most intriguing.

He was commenting on the falling Apple share prices and what investors should look forward to in Apple. The rumour of iPhone 6 is already doing rounds on internet, the company has not divulged any plans as yet. But according to Misek Apple should be launching a low-cost iPhone in June or July that would cost about $200 to $250, but this is very doubtful given the margins.
Misek however expects Apple to launch iPhone 5S in June or July, with a new super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC technology. It also could potentially have up to 128GB of flash storage, an IGZO screen for Retina+, and options for six to eight different colors.
Regarding iPad, Misek expects the iPad 5 to be launched in around June with an IGZO screen, which would cut the thickness in half and significantly reduce weight. The iPad Mini also should have some "modest spec boosts" including the possibility of multiple colors and an HD display.
Misek comments are considered very important by the economist and investors and given Apple's history at making sensational announcements the iPhone 5S can be a reality, however iPhone 6 is only expected in 2014.
Looking forward to more news from the financial jungle for our cause.

Nokia Confirms Windows Phone 7.8 Features

Source: Daily Mobile - December 11th, 2012
With Windows Phone 7.8 out already to OEM's and coming soon to end users in "early 2013" Nokia had been kind enough to nail down what is coming in this update. Above is a screenshot from a Nokia customer feedback survey which lets us know the features in Windows Phone 7.8. You can check out the list after the jump:

The tiny print above reads:
Below you can see the key features that both Microsoft and Nokia bring to the Windows 7.8 update:
From Microsoft
  • New homescreen experience with more room for your Live Tiles. Now resizable.
  • Set the Bing image of the day as the Lock Screen wallpaper.
  • Pocket and child Lock screen Security
  • 20 new accent theme colours
From Nokia
  • Bluetooth Share (for DRM free media files)
  • Cinemagraph add-on to create blend and photo and movie-like animation, creating photos that are alive
  • New camera lenses to remove unwanted objects in your photos such as passers-by or people on the edge of the shot the spoil the photo.
  • Updated Contacts Transfer application
  • Updates Contact Share application
  • Ringtone Maker application
This list makes me wonder, Nokia will bring more updates to the party than Microsoft. I will let you know when my Nokia Lumia 800 gets this update complete with video.

Samsung ATIV S Hits Shelves In Austria

Source: Daily Mobile - December 12th, 2012
Do you remember the Samsung ATIV S smartphone? Well if you do not, it was the first smartphone to be announced  running the updated version of Microsoft's Windows Phone 8 Mobile Operating System, and the smartphone that knocked Nokia die-hard fans off their feet before the announcement of the almighty Nokia Lumia 920 smartphone by the Finnish Tech Mogul. This beautifully crafted smartphone has been expected to hit shelves alongside its counterparts (Nokia Lumia Series and the 8X by HTC) but it was indefinitely delayed by Samsung.

And today as reported by GSMarena, the device is now available in Austria.

T Mobile Austria currently have the Samsung ATIV S and offers the 16GB variant for 49 euros on a 2 year contract with a 55.99 euros plan. The benefits includes; 4000 minutes, unlimited internet plan and 1000 SMS. Alternatively, the ATIV S can be purchased for 399 euros with a 16 euros/month plan. There was no news about the 32GB and 64GB version of the device.

It'a unclear if the smartphone will be subsequently released in other countries, rumours were escalating that Sweden is the next country to get the device but so far, there hasn't been any official confirmation about that.
In case you joined just now, Samsung ATIV S is a 4.8 inch Super AMOLED HD Screen with Gorilla Glass 2 for extra sturdiness, an 8MP rear Camera, a 1.9MP front Camera for video conferencing, 1.5GHz Qualcomm  dual core Krait Processor, MicroSD Card slot and 2300MAh Battery to mention a few. So if you live in Autria and you are one of those that had the opportunity to go home with one ATIV S smartphone, endeavour to share your hands-on experience with us here on Dailymobile.net.

Samsung Galaxy SII Multi-Window Mode App Arrives

Source: Daily Mobile - December 7th, 2012
Are you a Samsung Galaxy S II owner? It's a happy time for owners of the device that took the Koreans a mile forward in the Mobile game as the Multi-Window Mode which was one of the greatest features found in the sizzling Samsung Galaxy Note II and which later made it's way to the highly revered Samsung Galaxy S III, now arrives for Samsung Galaxy S II also.

This is a fully working mode and it's ''ONLY FOR 4.1.2 XXLSJ  deodexed ROMS'', with Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean build. So, if you are fascinated about the development, hit the source link below to get yours. Other features include; 4 icons shortcut on the lockscreen, ripple lockscreen, skip songs with volume rocker, no homebutton, and 4 way reboot.

It was rumored that Multi-View won't be compatible with Samsung Galaxy S II due to some impressions many people had about the ability of the size of the screen to run two applications  and maintain two windows at thesame time. And now, the reverse has been the case as the Samsung Galaxy S II has proven it's ability to handle multitasking and maintaining two windows beyond all reasonable doubts. Like I said earlier, hit the source  link to get your own share of the cake and don't forget to share your experience with us.

Xiaomi MI2 unboxing and first impressions

Source: Daily Mobile - December 7th, 2012
This week I received the Xiaomi MI2, the new flagship device from the Chinese company Xiaomi.
This is their first quad core device with some really amazing specifications and I am really excited to review this phone. I have run the MIUI ROM on my HTC Sensation XE since I always liked the look of it and also the extra built in features which will be mentioned in the full review. So here is what was in the box:
  • Phone
  • Battery
  • Charger (unfortunately Chinese but any charger with USB connector will do)
  • USB to Micro USB data cable
  • Warranty card
  • User manual (in Chinese)

No headphones are included but people mostly buy their own anyway and if you like some Xiaomi ones then you can find the online for a reasonable price.
Specifications of this device are really impressive:
  • 4.3” Screen, resolution of 1280x720
  • 2GB LPDDR2 RAM
  • 1.5GHz Snapdragon APQ8064 Quad Core CPU
  • Retina IPS Display @ 342 PPI compared to (iPhone Retina Screen @ 326 PPI)
  • Dolby® Audio System
  • 2000 (3100 available separately) mAh battery
  • 3.5mm headphone jack (top left of MI-2)
  • Adreno 320 graphics core
  • 8MP Rear Camera and 2MP Front Facing Camera
  • Android 4.1 (MIUI Jelly Bean)
  • 16/32GB EMMC Storage (NO MICRO SD SUPPORT)
  • GPS, GLONASS AGPS, Bluetooth HID, Bluetooth 4.0, Wi-Fi Direct
  • USB 2.0 / USB 2.0 OTG, MHL
  • FM Radio
  • 1080P & 720P quality recording
  • GSM Bands (850/900/1800/1900) Mhz, WCDMA (850/1900/2100) Mhz
  • WAPI / WLAN (Wi-Fi) 802.11b/g/n
  • DC HSDPA+ / HSPDA / 3G / EDGE / GPRS / WCDMA / GSM
  • LED Notifications
  • USB Charging port
  • Standard SIM Card connector
One thing that I noticed on using the phone in the dark the first time was that the capacitive buttons are NOT backlit. After some goggling I found that this is by design and really is a bit of a shame but no deal breaker in my opinion.
Other then that I am really pleased with the phone. It looks great, feels great in the hand and the screen is amazing. The speed so far is great and I am currently testing battery life. Will be back with a full review in a week or two.

Hike, the new instant messenger in town

Source: Daily Mobile - December 7th, 2012

Want to have free messaging for life? Get Hike. This is WhatsApp like app but with a lifetime free messaging opportunity.
Hike is a new Instant messenger launched by Indian Developers. It is easy, sleek and has an elegant interface. Whats more its free for life. The other great advantage is you can send 100 SMS's to non Hike users, who can read the messages in the native SMS inbox.
The developers are very positive to the reception this will receive as the competition in the IM place is getting rather crowded with FB also launching its own IM. What makes Hike different, here's what the developers had to say. They are building features like video chat, voice chat and what not, which the Indian infrastructure does not support. Also, somewhere the customer requires an app which is simple and enables him to do what he intends to, rather than building features which are seldom used.
Hike runs on 2G, 3G and wi-fi (when available) for connectivity.
Hike has tried to cash in on the fact that Indians are SMS crazy people and therefore  the Hike  app  allows  global users to send Hike2SMS and Indian users to reply with SMS2 Hike. The first option is free for Hike users, and the latter response costs only the same as a regular SMS. This way friends and relatives living outside India can stay connected. It doesn't require any username, pin or password.
The developers have promised a spam free app but how they are going to make money is anybodies guess. But the app is worth giving once-over.

Kindly download the app for your phone from here and post your comments.

WhatsApp for Windows Phone 8

Source: Daily Mobile Forum - December 7th, 2012
Windows  8 mobile users are sure to miss the highly successful instant messaging client WhatsApp in their new Windows 8 phone. But wait for a few days the product development for Windows Phone 8 is underway and will be released anytime soon.
The app is undergoing some heavy doses of alterations and will be launched for Windows Phone 8 some time in the very near future.
While there has been no official announcement from the developers of WhatsApp, the news is that the new app will be six times faster than previous versions  and   there will also be new emoji included in the upcoming version. The background audio API would remain the same however the real challenge is to devise a may to keep the system running in background, which is must for WhatsApp  considering that the  Microsoft  has severe restrictions on  third party apps.  Given the growing  popularity of WhatsApp, Microsoft sure doesn't want to be left behind in the race in mobile handsets market.

Earlier, downloads were available on WP store, but despite being able to activate and register  the app, users found it difficult to use WhatsApp.  So much so that the app has since been taken out  from the store. However with new Windows 8 phone launches likely to be taking place in the months ahead, Microsoft must  surely  know the importance of apps for Windows 8 and the lack of popular apps on the store.
Hope the update comes soon. Will keep you guys posted of any further developments.
