More Pics Leak of the Nokia Lumia 1520

nl1520 1 More Pics Leak of the Nokia Lumia 1520
Just in case there was anyone out there that had any doubts left about what the Nokia Lumia 1520 will look like when it get unveiled later this month here are a few more pics of the device. This device will clearly be the 6 inch phablet all the rumors had talked about but more interestingly is the GDR3 update it's running on these pictures.
You can see the extra row of tiles plus below is picture of the new multitask switcher that confirms the "x" in the upper right hand corner to clear an app.

My only knock on this device that I can see is the "Windows Buttons" are still the same space apart as they are on the other devices it should be spread out so the buttons are "centered" on the device. Perhaps even Nokia should have simply moved them to right for easier one handed operation. What are your thoughts on this device?

Rumor: Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet to Have a Kickstand

Nokia Tablet Kickstand 500x140 Rumor: Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet to Have a Kickstand
According to the site that broke the Nokia smartwatch leak CtechCN.com this is the back of unreleased Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet and it's bringing with it a kickstand. While it's not the almost unnoticeable rear flap on the Surface devices it would be just as useful for extended use of this tablet.
Also leaked out is a rumor of an optional wireless charging cover that would wrap around the device much like they do for Nokia phones. This charging cover is also rumored to have an extra battery built into it for extended use and it's own kickstand.
nokia sirius tablet1 500x281 Rumor: Nokia Lumia 2520 Tablet to Have a Kickstand
The kickstand leak seems to be dubious to me. As you can see by the above picture there is no kickstand on the branded Verizon Lumia 2520 which would lead me to believe that the tablet in the first picture was simply a prototype.

Google Rolls Out App Vending Machines; I Wonder Why

appvending 500x263 Google Rolls Out App Vending Machines; I Wonder Why
Google has just rolled out app vending machines in Japan... that's right app vending machines. This means that if you want an app all you have to do is find one of these machines, put your Android 4.0 device (with NFC) on the tray, wait for the Bluetooth pairing, choose an app from the huge touchscreen, and wait for the download. Simple right?

Plus it could be used in Jeopardy one day as an answer.
Me: "Alex I will take things that are pointless for $500"
Alex: "These huge touchscreen vending machines will download apps to your Android smartphone just like the Play Store on your device but with 5 extra steps"
Me: "What is Google Play Vending Machines?"
Alex: "Correct for $500 pick another category"
Seriously though what's the point here? I could see where this would be useful in countries with slow 2G internet service or places where WiFi doesn't exist but if you have an Android device with NFC and the 4.0 build of Android or higher you most likely have WiFi or 4G service.
Am I missing something here?

Convergence… it’s a tougher choice these days

Cloud Convergence... its a tougher choice these days
5 years ago the choice was simple, if you wanted an OS solution that 'brought things together' Apple was the 'only' feasible way to go, Windows was too clunky and Android was to limited.

But things have changed, somewhat anyhow and I guess that there is no point in trying to convince 'die-hards' to change but what I would advise is to try out, or play around with the different options, the choice I promise you is not as one sided as it used to be...
With Windows 365 and SkyDrive now nicely merged I must admit I'm rather impressed at the progress Windows have made, yes a bit clunky still but very functional and pretty user friendly, I think out of the 3 OS's Windows has improved the most. With Android its a little less clear, yes the OS is still the best for smartphones but as OS focusing on convergence I think they have gotten to diverse... Google Drive, Google Docs, Google+, Google Hangouts, Google Photos... on and on it goes, with certain elements of some evident in others, its a bit unclear how they all gel, or not, or even if they are supposed to. And finally Apple, still really good but having this 'controlled eco-system' does peeve people (me included) and this certain level of reliance on iTunes doesn't do them any favours, 5 years ago fine but not anymore.
All have a 'cloud' element but, and I never thought I'd say this but with the launch of Windows 365, Windows is the best document solution out there I reckon, for media I think that Apple still has the edge, just, and then as a jack of all trades Android does well but in an often disparate manner. Android needs to reduce things, and link them more cohesively from a consumer perspective, and they should use Google+ as the core.

Samsung locking all new Galaxy smartphones to regions

Galaxy Note3 SIM LOCK Samsung locking all new Galaxy smartphones to regions
It looks like all new (Galaxy SII, Galaxy SIII, Galaxy S4, Galaxy S4 Mini and Note 3) devices produced after the end of July will be SIM-locked to the region in which they are sold.
All the new Galaxy Note 3 handsets are now shipped with a sticker on the box saying that the devices are now geographically SIM-locked.
note3SIMlock Samsung locking all new Galaxy smartphones to regions
Samsung Germany issued a statement that confirms the region SIM lock. Full statement below (Google translated):
SIM card usage in current Samsung products
Some current Samsung products are now provided with a local SIM card lock. This means that devices purchased in the European Union, with SIM cards of mobile operators from Germany and from the European Union and the European Economic Area (the "European region") work as usual.
Users of these Samsung devices can continue to use these together with their SIM card of a mobile operator from the European region via roaming service to appropriate roaming charges to their wireless service provider around the world. If purchased in the European Union and not yet been put into use to be activated for the first time abroad, users can unlock their device for the region free from local Samsung service partners.
The regional SIM card lock only affects the following Samsung models that are produced from the end of July 2013, and provided with a corresponding sticker:
  •  Samsung GALAXY S III, GALAXY Note II, GALAXY S4, GALAXY S4 mini and GALAXY Note 3.
Devices that have been delivered by Samsung and are in camps or even at retail are not affected.

Specifically, there is a functionality of the devices with SIM cards of mobile operators from the following countries:

  • Countries of the European Economic Area (EEA):
Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands , Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, UK, Switzerland, Croatia

  • Non-EU/EEA:
Albania, Andorra, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Macedonia, Moldova, Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Serbia, Vatican City
Not a smart move by Samsung! What do you say about this decision?

HTC Sells It’s Interest in Beats Back

beats studio HTC 500x334 HTC Sells Its Interest in Beats Back
It seems like only a few years ago that HTC was flush with cash and had 300 million dollars to spend on things like a speaker company owned by a rapper. Wait that was only a few years ago when HTC spent 300 million to purchase a 50.1% ownership in Beats by Dr Dre. That ownership was very short lived a year later HTC sold back half of it's shares to Beats. According to the latest reports HTC has sold back the remaining 25% interest in Beats for $265 million.
p>While there was no indication on why HTC sold back it's interest in Beats one would have to think HTC simply needed an injection of cash. For those of you worried about Beats audio leaving your HTC devices anytime soon do not... It has been reported that HTC devices will continue to use the beats technology for the foreseeable future.
