Ubuntu OS for tablets announced - Video

Source: Daily Mobile - February 19th, 2013

Canonical today unveiled its Ubuntu OS for tablets. Check the video of the Ubuntu founder Mark Shuttleworth explaining the Ubuntu OS for tablets.
Ubuntu OS for tablets features:
  • Real multitasking: Uniquely, Ubuntu allows a phone app on the screen at the same time as a tablet app. The Ubuntu side stage was invented both to enable efficient multitasking and to improve the usability of phone apps on tablets.
  • Secure multi-user: Multiple accounts on one tablet with full encryption for personal data, combined with the trusted Ubuntu security model that is widely used in banks, governments and sensitive environments, making it ideal for work and family use.
  • Voice controlled HUD productivity: The Heads-Up Display, unique to Ubuntu, makes it fast and easy to do complex things on touch devices, and transforms touch interfaces for rich applications, bringing all the power of the PC to your tablet.
  • Edge magic for cleaner apps: Screen edges are used for navigation between apps, settings and controls. That makes for less clutter, more content, and sleeker hardware. No physical or soft buttons are required. It's pure touch elegance.
  •  Content focus: Media is neatly presented on the customisable home screen, which can search hundreds of sources. Perfect for carriers and content owners that want to highlight their own content, while still providing access to a global catalogue.
  •  Full convergence: The tablet interface is presented by exactly the same OS and code that provides the phone, PC and TV interfaces, enabling true device convergence. Ubuntu is uniquely designed to scale smoothly across all form factors.

The Ubuntu tablet interface supports screen sizes from 6-inch to 20-inch and resolutions from 100 to 450 PPI.  Commercial tablets running Ubuntu will be released sometime in 2014 but installable image of the Ubuntu Tablet OS for the Nexus 7 and the Nexus 10 will be available on February 21.

Nokia Bringing Four New Devices to Mobile World Congress?

Source: Daily Mobile - February 17th, 2013
The rumor mill on Nokia devices was kicked up again by a single tweet from Alan Mendelevich, who runs Adduplex. Apparently he found a few unidentified handsets Nokia devices being used in the wild. These devices are Nokia RM-914  the RM-885, the RM-887 and RM-860.
The Nokia RM-914 is rumored to be the lowest end of Windows Phone devices Nokia makes and will turn out to be the Lumia 520. Rumored specs below:
  • 4 inch  Super Sensitive screen
  • 1Ghz Dual-core
  • 512Mb RAM
  • 8GB storage
  • microSD
  • WP8
  • 5MP with no front camera
While the RM-885 is the Lumia 720 which rumored specs are:
  • 4.3inch CBD
  • 1Ghz Dual-core
  • 512Mb RAM
  • 8GB storage
  •  WP8
  • microSD
  • 6MP camera
The last two are assumed to be the "Nokia Laser" and "Nokia Catwalk". The Catwalk is rumored to be a thinner light Lumia 920 in a aluminum body and the Laser is assumed to be the new Nokia 41mp PureView device. While the Nokia Laser and Catwalk will get all the attention it will be the Lumia 520 that will be the most critical in Nokia's success as a company. If Nokia can put out a sub 250USD Windows Phone 8 device it will allow them to succeed in critical countries like India and China.

Should Windows Phone be Aiming for the Low End Market?

Source: Daily Mobile - February 15th, 2013

Above you see the top for selling devices on Expansys USA this week. Note anything in common with these devices? They are all Windows Phone yes, they are all imports and they are all "low end" devices here in the states. This makes me wonder why Microsoft is not launching these smartphone in all markets. Is Windows Phone missing a huge opportunity by not leveraging these devices at this price point?
I'd say they are missing out. While these devices will not be iPhone beaters they will capture an important market. This the market of first time smartphone buyers who are not loyal to any one operating system yet. Lets face once you have an Android or iOS device under your belt you are much less likely to switch since you have money in apps and all your email, photo's, maps, etc... sunk into a particular eco-system.  Low end devices are "gateway" devices that will get you into an eco-system and will lead you into more expensive devices.
This market is very important to any OS and Windows Phone is an OS that can not afford to miss any opportunity at this point in the game. If Microsoft can get capture these "first timers" Windows Phone success will be much more rapid. All of these "low end" smart phones need to brought to all markets ASAP the first timer smartphone buyers market is dwindling fast if Microsoft waits to long this window of opportunity will close for good.

Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean new features

Source: Daily Mobile - February 13th, 2013

A couple of days ago Google has pushed Android 4.2.2 for GSM Galaxy Nexus, Nexus 7 and Nexus 10 and other than "performance and stability improvements" official changelog was not provided.  What's new? Check after the break.< 'p>
Download Notifications

New app downloads show percentage and estimated remaining time.
Quick Settings Toggles

You can use notification screen shortcuts as toggles, long press on the Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, single press on the Airplane Mode, if you just tap them it will take you to the setting app just like before the update. (Little bit confusing, right?)
There are also new sounds for Wireless Charging and low battery notification.
Right after the Android 4.2.2 was released, Google updated the Nexus 7 product page on the Play Store and instead of "Up to 8 hours of active use" now it says "Up to 10 hours of active use".
Did you notice any battery improvement after the update?

The Nokia Lumia 822 Has a Big Secret

Source: Daily Mobile - February 10th, 2013

As I was phone shopping last week I found out one the something that not a lot of people know out there. The Nokia Lumia 822 for Verizon is an unlocked GSM phone. That's right there is spot for a sim card in there and it almost doesn't matter who's card you slip in it works! A friend of mine is using his with a pre-paid carrier called Straight talk and I am using a local carrier called Immix Wireless on mine.
Why is this such good news you ask? Because this device is bargain on sites like Ebay. In fact as am writing this there is an 822 on Ebay for under 200USD delivered!  We are not talking about some old single cored low spec'd device here running Windows Phone 7.5. No, no, no this is a 1.5Ghz dual cored, 1 Gb of Ram, 16Gb of internal storage, 4.3 inch Gorilla Glass display with an 8mp camera on the back smartphone all for around 200USD contract free! This phone is a the Nokia Lumia 820's more beefier better spec'd twin brother. (My review for the Lumia 820 here.)
Which makes the real question for a lot of you out there will phone work with my carrier? The answer is that if the Lumia 822 supports your carriers bands and you have a GSM carrier it should. To make it easier I found the GSM bands the 822 works on and put them below for you.
  • GSM 850
  • GSM 900
  • GSM 1800
  • GSM 1900
  • LTE 700
The other question is data speed on this device and your carrier... Again I will put that information below for you.
  • HSPA+ (3G)
  • EDGE/EGPRS (2G)
  • FDD-LTE (4G)
  • HSUPA (3G)
  • GSM (2G)
  • HSDPA (3G)
  • LTE (4G)
  • CDMA (2G)
  • WCDMA (3G)
  • CDMA 2000 EVDO (3G)
You will want to verify with your carrier to make sure these bands will work with your carrier BEFORE you purchase this device. If you would like more information on the Nokia Lumia 822 check out the full spec sheet here.
