Most of the news concerning pay with your phone initiatives has been for NFC solutions available only in the US, like Google Wallet and Isis, but mobile phone payments in Europe got a big boost today from one of the continent’s biggest operators.
Vodafone joined the wave of companies working to process NFC payments with the launch of its Vodafone Wallet and SmartPass service. Vodafone customers who download the app onto a compatible Android phone will be able to pay at any of the 1 million-plus Visa contactless payment terminals in Europe. SmartPass also supports loyalty cards for repeat customers, gift cards, and vouchers for discounts.
Vodafone Wallet and SmartPass first launches today in Spain. The payment system will next launch in Germany in December, and then the UK, Netherlands, and Italy next year. NFC-capable smartphones from Samsung, Sony, and HTC are required to use the system.
