When Nokia decided to go Windows Phone and not Android, there were more than a few disappointed consumers out there. Being that Nokia's old OS Symbian on the surface closest matches Android, it would be the perfect marriage of hardware and software. Now there are pictures a prototype called Nokia Normandy which is a lower end Nokia device running a forked version of Android.
While it is running Android, rumor has it that it will not have all the Google goodies on board, including the Play Store, Google Maps, and all other Google-owned services. Instead it will be more like Amazon's Kindle Fire with it's own app store and it will be pre-loaded with Nokia's own Here Maps suite. When a company forks Android, they lose the ability to distribute Google Apps, so Nokia will have to handle things on its own.
According to the rumors, this device is not just a pipe dream; it will be launched at Mobile World Congress next month as the Asha 1045. Nokia would be able to launch such a device and still keep good on their promise to launch only Windows Phone smartphones simply because this device would be classified as a feature phone. The sales agreement Nokia reached fwith Microsoft prevents Nokia from releasing smartphones, but feature phones are still on the table.
