Qualcomm is one of many companies making big announcements at CES 2014, and the chipset maker that appears in most Android phones got the event off to a big start by unveiling some unique camera features supported by its recently updated Snapdragon 805 processor. The incremental update to last year's 800 chipset includes three new features called ChromaFlash, OptiZoom, and Touch to Track that can do some interesting things.
With ChromaFlash, the camera takes a flash photo and a non-flash photo, and then merges the two for a more balanced and interesting photo. Think of it as HDR for flash photography. OptiZoom brings auto-zoom to lock onto a specific object and zoom in on it when it moves. Touch to Track also tracks an object, but it's designed to begin recording once that object passes a specific point, which can be useful in some limited creative circumstances.
All of these features are enabled by the Snapdragon 805, but it will be up to phone manufacturers to decide if and how they will support them in their phones. Here are some demo videos of what we could see in the next round of Android and Windows Phone devices arriving later this year.
